Palla Grossa is Prato’s medieval tradition. Four teams, one for each of the city’s four ancient quarters: Quartiere Verde – San Marco, Quartiere Giallo – Santo Stefano, Quartiere Rosso – Santa Trinita and Quartiere Azzurro- Santa Maria.
From the springs of the Bisenzio to where it meets the Arno
from the mountains that look over this valley to the Plain that
stretches towards Pistoia on one side and towards Florence on the other
let the spinning mills grind to a halt, let the looms fall silent
and let every other labour wait until, amid the joy of all the people,
the noble contest is settled in this square
between those who represent the mountain and the plain of this our beloved land
